New York, USA – 23 September 2026 – The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), the leading philanthropy empowering young African entrepreneurs, today launched its 15-Year Impact Report on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York, following the conclusion of its first in-person Board Meeting of 2026. The launch brought together TEF Board Members, strategic partners, development stakeholders and other leaders to mark 15 years of investment in African entrepreneurship and look ahead to the Foundation’s next phase of impact.

Collectively, TEF entrepreneurs have created more than 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs and generated more than US$4.2 billion in revenue. In addition:

• Independent assessment finds businesses funded with $5,000 grants created jobs at a cost of under $80 each, and that four in five were still trading a year later.
• Over 25% of TEF beneficiaries have acquired additional investors in their business since receiving the funding
• Programme has empowered over 7,183 women, with 85% of these women leading their businesses
• 80% of funded entrepreneurs since 2015 are still in business

The 15-Year Impact Report captures the scale of this journey, documenting entrepreneurs supported, businesses built, jobs created, lives impacted and communities transformed, while highlighting the role of sustained investment in entrepreneurship in advancing inclusive and sustainable economic growth across Africa.

The Foundation has also appointed Fatou Haidara, Deputy to the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and Kartik Jayaram, senior partner at McKinsey & Company, to its Advisory Board. Ms Haidara is UNIDO’s Managing Director for Global Partnerships and External Relations and the Director General’s Special Representative for Africa. Before joining UNIDO she served the Government of Mali for eight years, as Minister of Employment and Vocational Training and as Minister of Industry, Trade and Private Sector Development. Mr Jayaram, who is based in Nairobi, leads McKinsey’s sustainability practice across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, previously served as managing partner of the firm’s East African office, and co-authored its Green Africa series. He has advised the Kenyan Office of the President on the country’s Big Four agenda.

They join an Advisory Board that includes Fatou Assah, Executive Director (Alt) at the International Monetary Fund; H.E. Badr Jafar, the United Arab Emirates’ Special Envoy for Business and Philanthropy and chief executive of Crescent Enterprises; Per Heggenes, founding chief executive of the IKEA Foundation; and Professor Paul Gompers of Harvard Business School, who has written a case study on the Foundation’s work.

Speaking on the Foundation’s 15-year journey, TEF Founder, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, said:

We call it democratising luck — making opportunity a matter of what you can do rather than where you were born.”

Highlighting the Foundation’s commitment to gender inclusion and women’s economic empowerment, Somachi Chris-Asoluka, CEO, Tony Elumelu Foundation, said: “In this report you will see The Tony Elumelu Foundation’s accomplishments since our founding in 2010, it takes you through all our activities even before we started our flagship entrepreneurship programme in 2015. Today, women account for 48% of Tony Elumelu Foundation beneficiaries, collectively creating nearly 580,000 direct and indirect jobs and generating more than US$319 million in annual revenue. These results demonstrate what is possible when women entrepreneurs have the access and opportunity to build and scale.”

The launch marks 15 years of sustained investment in African entrepreneurs and reinforces the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s commitment to entrepreneurship and private-sector-led development as catalysts for Africa’s economic transformation.

Somachi Chris-Asoluka at the Brazilian Philanthropy Forum 2026

Somachi Chris-Asoluka, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, was invited to speak at the Brazilian Philanthropy Forum 2026, a premier annual gathering of philanthropic leaders, social investors, corporate foundations, and civil society organizations.

At the forum, she shared powerful insights from Africa on how catalytic philanthropy can empower young entrepreneurs through technology and inclusive partnerships. One key takeaway she left the audience with: “Learn, learn, learn. Never be satisfied or complacent with what you know.”

Her contribution underscored TEF’s commitment to driving sustainable development by equipping the next generation of African entrepreneurs with the tools and networks they need to thrive.

Growing a Dream Through Nature and Creativity

For Niry Gabrielle Raveloarinanja, becoming a female entrepreneur was a childhood dream. Today, as the founder of Malagasy Design, a 2021 TEF-funded business in Madagascar, she is turning that dream into a thriving venture.

Malagasy Design specialises in horticulture, pottery and landscaping, creating customised miniature landscapes with natural plants and bonsai. The business also offers succulent arrangements, houseplants, ceramic décor and event decoration.

Niry credits the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme with helping her take the step into entrepreneurship, driven by her desire for independence and to contribute to the development of her country.

Looking ahead, she hopes to expand her vision by creating a Japanese-inspired relaxation and wellness space for meditation, yoga and relaxation. With creativity, authenticity and a deep love for nature at the heart of her work, Niry continues to grow a business that reflects both her passion and her entrepreneurial spirit.

Seeds of Innovation: Jama Ibrahim’s Mission to Feed Somaliland

Jama Ibrahim Yassin established Hadi Farming Enterprises in 2016 to tackle food security challenges through sustainable, smart farming technologies in Somaliland. With TEF funding received in 2016, he launched a hybrid production model that combines Shade Net Growing Systems for exotic crops with open-field farming for large-scale vegetables. Using drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and organic practices, Hadi Farming reduces reliance on imports while proving that local agriculture can thrive with innovation.

Since the TEF grant, Jama has integrated circular economy principles and scaled climate-resilient systems powered by solar irrigation. Hadi Farming now serves as a proof-of-concept for modern agriculture in Somaliland, blending automation, data analytics, and youth training to build the next generation of agronomists. From leafy greens to fruiting vegetables, the enterprise is feeding communities and inspiring a professional, high-tech future for agriculture in the region.

Cultivium at 10: Jean Emmanuel Labonne’s Bold Expansion

Founded in 2016 and fueled by TEF funding in 2017, Jean Emmanuel Yannick Labonne created Cultivium, a dynamic enterprise bridging culture, education, and technology. Headquartered in Mauritius and South Africa, Cultivium has supported over 50 local businesses with social media management while evolving from cultural tourism into affordable housing, digital currencies, and global relocation services.

As Cultivium prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary in November 2026, the company is launching eight new international branches, backed by visionary partners like Mauzenial.com and Leko974. Endorsed by the African Union as one of Africa’s Top 50 education innovators, Cultivium is redefining how education and technology intersect. The land was small, but the vision was big: The Story of Mary Msigwa

In 2024, Mary Msigwa launched CAM3 Estate Company to drive climate-smart farming and empower smallholder farmers in Dodoma, Tanzania. Starting with just one acre, she integrated drip irrigation, organic pest control, crop rotation, and solar-powered water pumping to cut emissions and boost food security.

Today, CAM3 is more than a farm. It’s a hub for vegetable and fruit production, nursery services, agri-tourism, and youth training. By purchasing and storing produce from smallholder farmers, especially women, Mary helps reduce post-harvest losses and secure fair prices, lifting rural incomes.

From one acre to a model of eco-friendly agribusiness in Central Tanzania. This is what determination and sustainability can achieve.

Mary Msigwa: Growing Prosperity Through Climate-Smart Farming in Tanzania

Mary launched CAM3 Estate Company in 2024 to champion sustainable horticulture and empower smallholder farmers in Dodoma, Tanzania. Through CAM3 Horticultural Farm, she integrates climate-smart practices like drip irrigation, organic pest control, crop rotation, and solar-powered water pumping to reduce environmental impact and improve food security.

Operating on a 1-acre farm, CAM3 has become a hub for vegetable, fruit, and seedling production, while also offering nursery services, agri-tourism (farm tours), and youth training programs. By purchasing and storing produce from smallholder farmers—especially women—CAM3 helps reduce post-harvest losses and ensures fair market prices, boosting rural incomes.

Since its establishment, CAM3 has trained young farmers in sustainable agriculture, cut carbon emissions by 20% through solar-powered systems, and positioned itself as a model for eco-friendly agribusiness in Central Tanzania.

Connecting Farmers to Opportunity: Viola’s Essymart Africa Story

Viola launched Essymart Africa in 2022 to connect smallholder farmers to markets, inputs, and processing services. Funded by TEF in 2024, Essymart now serves over 5,000 farmers across Eastern Uganda, helping them increase incomes by 40–45% through digital tools like WebApp, SMS, and voice calls.

The platform has expanded into multiple districts, opened rural retail outlets, and is building processing facilities to reduce postharvest losses. By promoting sustainable practices and empowering women in agriculture, Essymart is tackling poverty at the root level while strengthening food security and climate resilience.

We held a meeting with the Minister of Youth to discuss the impact of the Foundation and alignment with the Cameroonian government. We also held an alumni meetup with over 50 alumni in attendance!

For the 2026 TEF Flagship Entrepreneurship Programme, we are currently in the Seed Capital Submission Phase, where entrepreneurs are submitting their identification and business registration documents, etc.

Lawrence Hoba, Founder of ENRAPOWER

Lawrence established ENRAPOWER in Zimbabwe to deliver affordable renewable energy solutions across Southern Africa. The company has won multiple awards including SEED Africa (2019), Stanbic Bank Entrepreneurship (2024), and Gian Marco Morrati (2025), and secured $100,000 in funding.

ENRAPOWER’s integrated renewable energy systems have impacted tens of thousands of people, advancing access to clean power, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and contributing to multiple sustainable development goals.

Lawrence’s work positions Zimbabwe as a hub for renewable innovation while driving inclusive energy access.

What is Africa’s greatest economic asset? 

For decades, the answers have been familiar. Oil. Gas. Minerals. Arable land. Strategic geography. Foreign investment. 

Yet as the continent navigates an era defined by artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, demographic shifts and rapid technological disruption, another answer is becoming impossible to ignore. 

Africa’s greatest asset is its entrepreneurs. 

Not because it sounds inspiring. Because the evidence increasingly points in that direction. 

This conviction sits at the heart of a powerful message delivered by our CEO, Somachi Chris-Asoluka, to African entrepreneurs on this year’s Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day; a message that serves as both a celebration of entrepreneurial resilience and a challenge to how we think about Africa’s economic future. 

In a world of accelerating change, Soamchi’s message returned to a simple but profound truth: behind every successful economy are entrepreneurs who dared to begin. 

Entrepreneurs who saw opportunities where others saw obstacles. 

Entrepreneurs who created value where others saw limitations. 

Entrepreneurs who built businesses that became engines of jobs, growth, and prosperity. 

Across Africa today, millions of such entrepreneurs are at work. They are farmers improving productivity, manufacturers strengthening local supply chains, creatives exporting African culture to global audiences, healthcare innovators expanding access to care, and tech founders developing solutions tailored to African realities. 

Though they operate in different sectors and markets, they share one thing in common: They form the backbone of Africa’s economies. 

And yet, despite their enormous contribution, MSMEs are too often treated as a secondary part of economic development conversations rather than what they truly are: essential economic infrastructure. 

The world’s most prosperous economies were not built by governments alone. They were built by businesses. More specifically, by generations of entrepreneurs who transformed ideas into enterprises, enterprises into industries, and industries into national growth. 

Africa is no different. 

This is why Somachi Chris-Asoluka’s assertion that “Africa’s transformation will not be driven by aid alone. It will not be driven by governments alone. It will be driven by entrepreneurs who create value, solve problems, and generate shared prosperity” resonates so strongly. 

It challenges a narrative that has long defined conversations about African development. 

For years, development has often been viewed through the lens of external support, institutional interventions, and public-sector programmes. These remain important. But sustainable prosperity requires something more enduring: productive businesses capable of creating jobs, generating income, and strengthening communities. 

Entrepreneurs make that possible. 

The Tony Elumelu Foundation’s experience over the past decade and a half offers compelling proof. 

What began as a bold belief in entrepreneurship as a catalyst for economic transformation has evolved into the largest philanthropic commitment to entrepreneurship on the African continent. Today, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has empowered over 27,000 entrepreneurs across all 54 African countries, trained over 2.5 million Africans through TEFConnect, our proprietary digital platform, and disbursed over $130 million in seed capital. 

But perhaps the most telling figures are not the inputs. They are the outcomes. 

Businesses backed by the Tony Elumelu Foundation have generated more than $4.2 billion in revenue and created over 1.5 million jobs. 

Pause on those numbers for a moment. 

Behind every dollar generated is a business serving a market need. Behind every job created is an individual with an income, a family with greater stability, and a community with stronger economic prospects. 

Together, these entrepreneurs have positively impacted more than 4 million households and contributed to lifting over 2.1 million Africans above the poverty line. 

More than statistics, these numbers represent livelihoods transformed, opportunities unlocked and futures reshaped. 

They also reinforce a fact the Tony Elumelu Foundation has long understood: when African entrepreneurs are given access to training, networks, mentorship, and capital, they deliver results that extend far beyond individual business success. 

They create ripple effects that strengthen entire economies. 

This year’s MSME Day theme—“Empowering MSMEs through Innovation and Sustainable Industrial Development”—could hardly be more relevant. 

The businesses shaping Africa’s future today are operating in an increasingly complex environment. Artificial intelligence is changing how work is done. Climate pressures are forcing industries to adapt. Consumer expectations are evolving rapidly. Market opportunities emerge and disappear faster than ever before. 

Yet entrepreneurs remain uniquely positioned to navigate these shifts. 

Adaptability has always been their advantage. 

When markets change, they pivot. When challenges emerge, they innovate. When resources are limited, they find creative ways to build. 

This resilience is one of the defining characteristics of African entrepreneurship. 

Every day, entrepreneurs across the continent confront obstacles that would discourage many others, including limited access to financing, infrastructure gaps, regulatory complexities and economic uncertainty. Yet they continue to innovate, create and grow. 

As our CEO acknowledged in her message, their resilience deserves recognition. 

Not simply because perseverance is admirable, but because it is economically significant. 

Every entrepreneur who starts and sustains a business contributes to a larger story of African progress. Every enterprise that scales creates jobs. Every local solution reduces dependence on imported answers. Every thriving business strengthens the foundations of shared prosperity. 

The real significance of MSMEs, therefore, lies not only in their numbers but in their collective impact. 

They are often the first employers in emerging communities. They drive local commerce. They encourage innovation. They nurture talent. They unlock opportunities in places where few previously existed. 

In short, they do the essential work of nation-building. 

That is why MSME Day should be more than an annual celebration. It should serve as a reminder of what has always been true and what the evidence increasingly confirms. 

Africa’s future will not be built in boardrooms alone. It will not be secured through policy declarations alone. It will not be achieved through aid alone. 

It will be built by millions of entrepreneurs solving problems, creating value and generating opportunity where it is needed most. 

The Tony Elumelu Foundation’s journey (and the outcomes achieved by the entrepreneurs it supports) demonstrates what becomes possible when that belief is backed with action. 

TEF’s bet on African entrepreneurs is paying off. 

Not only in revenue generated or jobs created, important as those measures are. 

It is paying off in stronger communities. More resilient economies. Greater self-reliance. And a growing generation of entrepreneurs proving that Africa’s greatest resource is not what lies beneath the ground, but the ingenuity, determination and ambition of its people. 

That may be the most important lesson from this year’s MSME Day. 

The future belongs to those who create it. 

And across Africa, entrepreneurs are already doing exactly that.
