Are you an African entrepreneur? An Africapitalist at heart? A business-oriented person? Then these quotes will be incredibly insightful for you.

Here are 58 quotes from Tony Elumelu!

“There is a better way to invest in Africa for a sustainable future that creates value for all.”

“My vision for the foundation is to unlock the obstacles that African entrepreneurs face, so that they, rather than aid agencies or governments will spur the continent’s transformation”

As an entrepreneur myself, I understand what it feels like to yearn for a lifeline, to hope for a ‘big break’, to look forward to enjoying some luck.”

“Africapitalism is about the intersection of economic prosperity and social wealth, the intersection of making profit and doing good, and not waiting to finish one before you do the other.”

“Africapitalism is not exclusive to African businesses but we must set an example for others to follow”

“Only entrepreneurship can create opportunity where none seemingly exists.”

“Young entrepreneurs and those they inspire are the lifeblood of Africa’s rise.”

“Africapitalism therefore means we cannot leave the business of development up to our governments, donor countries and philanthropic organizations alone.”

“The kind of challenges we face on the continent require not only vision but also patience and perseverance.”

“Africapitalism is the nexus between the ability of the private sector to create value and the government’s creation of a business-friendly environment.”

“Companies that incorporate local value creation will be both more sustainable and more profitable in Africa in the long-term.”

“By investing in local economies and creating local jobs, they are also increasing the pool of those who can afford their products and services.”

“If you do not care about how your business is conducted, your very future may be at stake.”

“The old business model of a myopic pursuit of profit above all else is at best imprudent and, at worst, reckless in our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.”

“The future we all want for ourselves is one of our own making.”

“The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme is an act of faith in our entrepreneurs to transform our continent. Because business isn’t just about money.”

“Entrepreneurship means Africans no longer have to find a job or be trained to be employees. Instead, it will enable our young people to create their own jobs, become employers, and take charge of their futures, instead of letting the future happen to them.”

“I have come to understand that the most important thing I can do to advance our development is to help replicate my success in others and to evangelize the cause of entrepreneurship.”

“If we help people make something of themselves, by investing in jobs and economic opportunity, the beneficiaries will purchase healthcare, they will purchase education for their children and look after their families.”

“From the African perspective, development is a matter of realizing our potential and making the progress that we know is humanly possible because others have gotten there.”

“We need to give from the perspective of empowering the recipient, instead of making them dependent on us.”

“I believe that economic prosperity and social wealth must go hand in hand for maximum impact.”

“Everything I have today is because of Africa, I was born here, went to school here, I work here and I’m achieving some level of financial comfort here.”

“Whatever course you choose to take in the services of others, be guided by the goal of unleashing the inherent potential that resides in each and every one of us.”

“Eradication of poverty must be a collective responsibility.”

“The transformation of Africa is not one man’s job. It is a job for all of us, and by empowering these entrepreneurs, we are helping to create more jobs and wealth on the continent.”

“Poverty anywhere is a threat to everyone everywhere. It has to be dealt with by all structures – the government institutions, financial institutions and citizens.”

“Success in entrepreneurship is the outcome of a series of short term successes AND failures”.

“Today we may appear young, and people may not believe in us, but we are going to compel them to believe in us through our achievement.”

“Your idea can transform Africa. Let’s stop talking and let’s start doing.”

“A true leader is one who remains committed to a higher purpose that most others do not yet see. I have studied great people and one common thing I found among them is Legacy.”

“Let us remind ourselves of the power of individuals and what potent capacities and opportunities lie in this. No one but us will develop Africa.”

“People management is key. Learn how to motivate your people. Be painstaking in choosing the right people.”

“It’s a long-term journey. There is no quick fix. You will make mistakes. You will have challenges. For you to succeed along this journey, you must be disciplined, make sacrifices and save today to achieve your goals.”

“My passion for entrepreneurship is rooted in the economic philosophy of ‘#Africapitalism’, a term that I coined to emphasize the role Africa’s private sector must play in the socio-economic transformation of our continent.”

“It is encouraging to see Africa’s public sector recognize that Africa’s future will be determined not simply by economic growth, but by how successful we are in creating accessible pathways to economic prosperity for all Africans everywhere.”

“Africa is not a single country but a continent, one that is a place of real business opportunity that the world should be alive to.”

“Entrepreneurship, Support for small and medium scale enterprises in my viewpoint is one of the ways we can address poverty in a fundamental way.”

“Instead of having a pyramid of few billionaires, I prefer a large base that has prosperity, happier people, and people whose basic needs are met. I think that is what will give us the sustainability we need in Africa.”

“We need a new Marshall plan for Africa. This, for me, should be in improving access to electricity. Once that is done to a large extent, every other thing falls in place.”

“Wealth for one person in the family does not give security. What gives security is to see that we democratize prosperity around us as much as possible.”

“Businesses acting as businesses, not as charitable donors, is the most powerful force for addressing the pressing issues society face(s).”

“The pandemic presents an opportunity to reset Africa, create employment and eliminate poverty”.

“Most times businesses start off well, but poor management leads to early failure.”

“For us, we believe that we must, as business leaders in Africa, stand up, show confidence in our continent by investing in our continent, attract investments to the continent and help through this process to create jobs.”

“Africa, at a time like this, needs massive investment in infrastructure and power to help correct the poverty level we see.”

“We didn’t prepare for the pandemic, but it is all about nimbleness, agility, and swiftness to adaptation. We need to have inbuilt nimbleness in what we do so that we can swiftly react to changes.”

“Our people need jobs. Our people need role models. Our people need to see that you don’t need to migrate out of Africa to earn a living or to earn a decent life.”

“Impossibility only happens in the brain”.

“Never believe anything is impossible. Have an open mind. Find out what it takes to succeed. Chances are it will”.

“People see risks, we see opportunities. We go for opportunities and see how to mitigate the risks.”

“Your success means so much for Africa. You must succeed to lift us up. We will continue to encourage and support you.”

“Despite the pandemic, Africa is a continent of opportunities. There are challenges but there are also huge returns on investment. The time to invest in Africa is now.”

“African youth need technological opportunities. They need hope. They need tech for good and they want tech for all”.

“Africa has a demographic structure that if well harnessed can confer a competitive advantage on us as a continent in this 21st century. But we are not doing all that we must do.”

“We must all work hard to put the youth out of the streets. Failure to do so will spell doom for all of us.”

“You must realize that leadership to a large extent is not bestowed, it is not handed over to you. You must prepare yourself for leadership and it will come to you.”

“I would say changing Africa is our collective responsibility. Every one of us must realize that we need an improved Africa. The world is moving and evolving, and we face a huge risk of further widening the developmental gap if we do nothing.”

November 1, 2020, Bamako, Mali – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the global development network of the United Nations, and the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) — the leading champion of entrepreneurship in Africa — have opened applications for the TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme to train, mentor and fund 10,000 young Malian entrepreneurs over a 3-year period, as part of significant economic recovery intervention in Mali.

This youth empowerment initiative is part of the broader Tony Elumelu Foundation-UNDP Entrepreneurship Program, launched in 2019 to support 100,000 entrepreneurs across Africa.

The United Nations estimates that over 1.7 million people have been displaced by violence in Mali since 2012, further exacerbating an already volatile Sahel region. The TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme directly addresses the economic roots of the crisis, helping to create a basis for sustainable peace in the long term.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Programme demonstrates that entrepreneurship is the single most effective tool to create jobs, opportunity, economic hope, sustained growth, and poverty alleviation.

Commenting on this development, the Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu said “under the global leadership of Achim Steiner, the UNDP has shown a long-lasting commitment to vulnerable and at-risk populations throughout Africa and shares our belief at TEF in the power of entrepreneurship and youth empowerment”.

Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, said: “COVID 19 recovery strategies must offer new opportunities for SMEs and the Informal economy. The United Nations Development Programme is proud of our partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, now expanded to Mali – to invest in 10,000 Malian young entrepreneurs over 3 years. This will counter multidimensional crises by creating jobs, boosting innovation and promoting greener economic growth”.

The programme follows the recently concluded TEF-UNDP Sahel Pilot Programme in 2019 which identified, trained, mentored, and funded 2,004 young entrepreneurs across seven Sahel countries, including Mali, where close to 300 young Malian entrepreneurs benefited from this initiative.

The applications for the TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme will be hosted on TEFConnect, the largest digital networking platform for African entrepreneurs from November 1st to 14th, developed by The Tony Elumelu Foundation. Following the application period, applicants will receive business training and mentorship, before participating in a pitching competition. The final list of beneficiaries to receive funding will be announced shortly after.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) joined the United Nations and other global organisations to mark the International Youth Day on August 12, 2020, with a line-up of pan-African speakers discussing the theme, “Investing in Africa’s Future: Youth Empowerment through Entrepreneurship”.

The event emphasised the “Youth Engagement for Global Action” agenda and the role of African entrepreneurs in pushing for sustainable development. It also examined the critical role of the youth in igniting their potential, population, and influence to create mechanisms for sustainable development across the continent.

Moderated by TEF CEO, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, the event featured a line-up of pan-African entrepreneurs and speakers from the development sector.

Addressing the audience, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu drew attention to the plight of startup African entrepreneurs during the pandemic while highlighting the importance of SMEs, especially during this period. “The SMEs are the major contributors to African economies. We must not underestimate the level of disruption and uncertainty that young people all over the world have faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.”

Ifeyinwa emphasized the need to empower the youth to tackle the menace of poverty on the continent.

Wambui Gichuri, Ag. VP Agriculture, Human, and Social Development, African Development Bank stated: “Entrepreneurship is an essential part of Africa’s employment challenge and it is where we have to put our focus as a multilateral development bank”.

She added: “We need to do whatever it takes to empower our youth because they are the future of the continent”.

Martha T.M. Phiri, PhD, Director, Human, Youth and Social Development, African Development Bank, stated that the $5million partnership between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Tony Elumelu Foundation in 2019 to empower additional young African entrepreneurs, was a step in the right direction to create jobs on the continent. “That was a very exciting partnership and we feel this should be the way forward if we are going to create jobs on the continent,” she said.

Shoroke H. Zedan, Chairman, World Youth Skills, Egypt said: “It is important that governments start looking at entrepreneurship as a fundamental core topic that needs to be integrated into the educational system”.

Speaking on incorporating the youth into policymaking decisions, the Global President, AISEC, Alexandra Robinson stated: “I advocate for any policy that involves young people as co-owners of the policymaking process. I really believe that when young people are given co-ownership of the table, not just invited to someone else’s, they are able to have those meaningful conversations”.

Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, Founder, Wecyclers Nigeria and past fellow of the Tony Elumelu Foundation recalled the moment when she got accepted into the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme: “In 2012, when I was invited to the Tony Elumelu Foundation to pitch my idea, I was very fortunate to pitch directly to Mr. Elumelu and I was surprised a couple of days after, we got the grant. That grant was very important for Wecyclers”.

Speaking as an entrepreneur doing business on the continent, Leroy Mwasaru, Founder, Greenpact Kenya and an alumnus of the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s flagship Entrepreneurship Programme highlighted the need for transparency to attract more investors: “It is as a result of sharing what we have been doing that we hope there are less failures and more successes”. Earlier in the year, due to the pandemic, the Tony Elumelu Foundation announced the postponement of its flagship TEF Entrepreneurship Programme and TEF Forum, the largest gathering of African entrepreneurs on the continent. Celebrating its 10th year anniversary later in 2020, the Foundation counts over 9,000 young African countries across all 54 African countries as beneficiaries and alumni of its Entrepreneurship Programme. It continues to support African entrepreneurs with expert-led masterclasses, business management training and market linkages on its digital networking platform, TEFConnect.

In Morocco, 80% of students between the age of 15 – 18 are uncertain about their future. As a result, they graduate without the personal and professional skills needed for the world of work.

To tackle this growing silent crisis, TEF Entrepreneur and Founder of Shine Space, Nora Chaynane founded Shine Space, Morroco’s foremost socio-educational initiative to bridge the knowledge gap and guide students to finding the right career path.

Shine space offers opportunities to students to prepare early and acquire technical and interpersonal skills, beyond what the schools provide, to meet the demands of today’s world of work.

Before the pandemic, Shine Space delivered over 10 workshops to offer these unique opportunities to students through offline trainings and online interactions.

In response to the Covid-19 panedmic, Nora and her team pivoted their operational strategy online. In addition to that, she collaborated with the small health centres and the Health Ministry to raise awareness and fight the negative social impact of Covid-19.

To further drive the vision of her company, Nora is set to launch Glisa bla VISA (A discussion without VISA) – Morocco’s first interactive platform aimed to improve the professional and conversational skills in foreign languages using focused groups (talk rooms), while discussing trending news.

Since the lockdown, Shine Space has hosted 20 workshops, supported 100 students with the in-person mentorship, and benefited over 2,500 participants.

Shine Space previously won the Social Impact Prize in the National Entrepreneurship Competition GPE in Kenitra and the American Student Leaders program.

Barbara Kamba-Nyathi is an author, social psychologist, inspirational speaker, mediator, poet, entrepreneur, and lifestyle and wellness coach. She is a two-time TEDx speaker and the co-founder and CEO of Bold Dialogue Investments P/L, an organisation that aims to empower, inspire and guide women to become the best versions of themselves.

Bold Dialogue creates an atmosphere of healing, transformation and growth. In addition to bringing women together to support, mentor, and encourage one another, Bold Dialogue hosts vision boarding workshops that enable women to bring their dreams to life, and presents master classes on various topics that enable women to rise above their circumstances. Through its online activities, the organisation engages with women across the African continent. Bold Dialogue also offers coaching and mentorship services, and publishes a newsletter that empowers women from the bedroom to the boardroom.

Barbara, who hails from Zimbabwe, is passionate about accompanying women along their healing journeys, guiding and coaching them towards emotional freedom. She is a woman who knows emotional pain too well, but has learned to work through life’s darkest storms and emerge stronger and more purpose-driven than ever before. She has survived cervical cancer, endometriosis, a hysterectomy, a divorce, abuse and also lives with an autoimmune disease. Barbara relates to women from all walks of life, experiencing various struggles. She understands what it is to be stripped of everything you had, and who you thought you were, and then redefine and rebuild your identity according to your own rules.

She’s learned that it is crucial for one to take time to heal physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Despite living with pain, she wears her scars with pride, constantly sets new milestones, and embraces being different.

In recognition of her work towards women empowerment she was named one of Amahle Magazine’s 25 most influential women in Zimbabwe for 2020.

The coronavirus is spreading across the world, and the far-reaching implications cannot be quantified yet. Globally, the disease has raised health and economic concerns, amidst others, and a direct hit on Africa, the 2nd most populous continent, could trigger a global nightmare.

This must be avoided.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation wants to ensure that Africans are safe, informed and equipped to deal with this menace to stall its spread.

These are helpful suggestions to help us deal with this together:

Don’t panic. Don’t Spread Rumours.
Firstly, don’t panic, and more importantly, don’t spread panic-driven rumours. At a time like this, it is important that you remain calm enough to receive, process and absorb critical information before taking any action.

We know the implications of rumours in our society. They can cause more damage than the disease if special care is not taken so please discourage others from spreading false information.

Verify all information
We always speak about private and public sector collaboration, and this is one scenario where this becomes important.

Whatever information you receive on the coronavirus, it is important that you verify the information first with the relevant government authorities. This way, we work together to achieve the same goal of stopping the spread of Covid-19.

Health First
While business is important, your life and the lives of your loved ones matter more.

Observe specific actions as outlined by the World Health Organisation and by our local health authorities, including:

Avoiding crowded spaces

Observing social distancing

Washing your hands regularly

Using a hand sanitiser

Not touching your face

Eating healthy to strengthen your immune system

Observing the self-isolation regulations if you travel

Contacting the nearest health personnel if you observe Covid-19 symptoms

Working remotely, if you can

Contingency and Business Continuity Plan
Prepare for worse case scenarios, especially if your country announces a lockdown. Review your business processes in areas that may suffer if you have to take time off work and prepare solutions to mitigate the risks.

In conclusion, we are hopeful that this too will pass and quickly at that, but we must all work together at this time to preserve the lives of the people around us and ensure that the negative impact on the socio-economic climate of our dear continent is reduced to the barest minimum.

Safety first.
