Yet for many students in rural Rwanda, access to laboratories and practical learning tools remains limited, making science and technology feel distant and inaccessible.

Para Esperance Iradukunda, this challenge became a mission.

As the founder of Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd, Esperance is helping bridge the gap between theory and practice by bringing virtual laboratories, educational robotics, and interactive STEM learning experiences to underserved schools across Rwanda. Through technology-driven solutions, she is ensuring that geography no longer determines a child’s access to quality science education.

Esperance Iradukunda Turned a Personal Experience into a Purpose-Driven Venture

Growing up in Bugesera District and later working as a computer science teacher, Esperance witnessed firsthand how limited access to practical STEM education affected students’ confidence, curiosity, and career aspirations.

Many learners were expected to understand scientific concepts without ever conducting an experiment or interacting with laboratory equipment. For girls in particular, the lack of exposure to science and technology often reinforced barriers to pursuing careers in STEM fields.

Rather than accept this reality, Esperance saw an opportunity to create change.

Believing that every child deserves access to engaging and practical science education, she founded Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd in 2023. Her goal was simple but ambitious: make hands-on STEM learning accessible to students aged 12 to 18 through affordable, technology-enabled solutions tailored to underserved communities.

Making STEM Education Accessible Through Innovation

Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd develops virtual laboratories, game-based science simulations, and low-cost educational robotics kits designed for schools with limited infrastructure.

By aligning its solutions with Rwanda’s national curriculum, the company enables students to conduct practical science activities even in schools without traditional laboratory facilities. The technology is specifically designed to function in environments where electricity and digital resources may be limited, ensuring accessibility for rural communities.

The initiative is helping transform how students experience science education, moving beyond textbooks to interactive learning that encourages experimentation, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

However, building the business was not without challenges.

In its earliest stages, Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd operated with extremely limited resources. Esperance relied on school visits, online sessions, and personal networks to introduce her solutions to students and educators.

At the time, the business generated only US$10 in revenue and was entirely managed by Esperance alone. While the vision was compelling, scaling the initiative required funding, business development support, and access to a broader network.

How the Tony Elumelu Foundation Helped Accelerate Growth

A significant milestone came in 2024, when Esperance was selected for the Programa de Empreendedorismo da Fundação Tony Elumelu (TEF).

Through the programme, she received business training, mentorship, and seed capital, equipping her with the tools needed to strengthen and scale her enterprise.

Beyond funding, the TEF programme helped Esperance refine her business strategy, strengthen her leadership capabilities, and develop a more sustainable growth plan for Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd.

The support enabled her to enhance the company’s STEM learning kits, improve its virtual learning platform, and expand outreach efforts to reach more students in remote communities.

The growth was immediate and tangible.

What began as a one-person initiative evolved into a team of four employees, comprising two women and two men, reflecting Esperance’s commitment to inclusion and gender equity. Participation in the programme also increased the company’s visibility, creating opportunities to collaborate with schools, district education authorities, and organisations working to improve educational outcomes across Rwanda.

Esperance Iradukunda is Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

The importance of Esperance’s work extends far beyond the classroom.

As Rwanda continues its journey towards becoming a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy, access to quality STEM education is becoming increasingly important. The skills developed through practical science learning, including creativity, analytical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, are critical for success in the modern workforce.

Through Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd, Esperance is helping prepare young people for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while nurturing a culture of innovation from an early age.

Esperance envisions expanding Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd to reach more underserved schools across Rwanda and eventually across Africa.

Her long-term ambition is to ensure that every student, regardless of location or economic background, can access practical and engaging STEM education. By continuing to develop innovative learning tools and strengthen partnerships with schools and education stakeholders, she hopes to empower thousands more young people with the skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.

As governments, educators, and development partners increasingly recognise the importance of STEM education for future economic growth, solutions like Virtual Lab and Workshop Ltd are helping ensure that no community is left behind.

Through innovation, determination, and a commitment to educational equity, Esperance Iradukunda is proving that when young people are given the opportunity to experiment, create, and discover, they gain more than scientific knowledge. They gain the confidence and skills to shape the future.

A child’s passion for science often begins with hands-on discovery, conducting experiments, building robots, or seeing classroom lessons come to life.
