In today’s rapidly changing business landscape, entrepreneurship is a powerful driver of economic growth and innovation. Now more than ever, African youth are embracing entrepreneurship as a pathway, not only to financial independence but also as a means to shape their communities and drive lasting change. At the heart of this transformation is the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), which recognizes that successful entrepreneurs need more than just a great idea; they need the right skills and knowledge to start, manage, and grow their businesses effectively. In this piece, we delve into the pivotal role of business management training in entrepreneurial success and how the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s Business Management Training, which is accessible to all African entrepreneurs on its digital proprietary platform – TEFConnect, is shaping the future of African entrepreneurship.

The Power of Entrepreneurship:

Entrepreneurship is a force that can unlock immense potential in Africa. With the continent’s youthful population (about 60%), fostering entrepreneurial endeavors amongst the youth has the potential to significantly create jobs, address pressing social issues, and ensure Africa’s economic development. However, the journey from a business idea to a thriving business is fraught with challenges, and entrepreneurs need the right tools and resources to navigate this complex terrain successfully.

The Need for Business Management Training:

While passion and creativity are essential for entrepreneurship, they must be complemented by strong business acumen, and this is where business management training becomes crucial. Entrepreneurs must understand financial management, marketing strategies, operations management, and other critical aspects of running a business. They need to develop competencies in problem-solving, leadership, and decision-making to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities effectively.

The TEF Entrepreneurship Programme Business Management Training on TEFConnect:

Through TEFConnect, the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s digital platform, African entrepreneurs can access a comprehensive Business Management Training that covers various aspects of entrepreneurship. This training is designed to empower young African entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools needed to build and scale sustainable businesses.

The TEF Entrepreneurship Programme Business Management Training covers:

Financial Management Modules: Entrepreneurs learn to develop budgets, manage cash flow, and make sound financial decisions. This financial literacy is fundamental for the long-term viability of their ventures.

Marketing and Sales Modules: Understanding customer behavior, market trends, and effective sales strategies is vital for reaching target audiences and driving revenue growth.

Operations and Efficiency Modules: Entrepreneurs discover how to optimize their operations for efficiency, quality, and scalability. Streamlining processes can lead to cost savings and improved productivity.

Leadership and Team Management Modules: Leadership skills are honed, enabling entrepreneurs to inspire and lead their teams effectively, fostering a positive work environment, and achieving common goals.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Modules: The training equips entrepreneurs with problem-solving techniques and decision-making frameworks that are essential for overcoming obstacles and making informed choices.

Impact and Success Stories:

The impact of The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme Business Management Training is reflected in the success stories of numerous Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs who have transformed their ideas into thriving businesses. These entrepreneurs credit their ability to navigate challenges and seize opportunities to the knowledge gained through the training. Their businesses are not only creating jobs but also contributing to their communities and countries’ economic development.

In line with the TEF Founder, Tony O. Elumelu’s economic philosophy of “Africapitalism”, the Foundation’s approach focuses on driving economic prosperity as well as social wealth, by ensuring that African entrepreneurs are not just successful business leaders but also responsible, impactful, and transformative forces within their communities and beyond. The future of Africa is in the hands of its youth, and by training, mentoring, and providing them with access to networks and opportunities, we are nurturing a generation of visionary entrepreneurs who will lead Africa to new heights of growth and development.

Eu me beneficiei desse Programa em 2015, e ele me abriu muitas portas e oportunidades.

According to 2015 entrepreneur Tony Elumelu, Hauwa Liman, female business owner and founder of Afrik Abaya: “I am always proud to say that I am part of the inaugural cohort of the Tony Elumelu Foundation entrepreneurship program. My company is located in Kaduna, in the north of Nigeria. I benefited from this program in 2015, and it opened up a lot of doors and opportunities for me. It’s not just the seed capital, but what really fascinates me about the program is the knowledge. I call it a mini-MBA program because from the ideation stage it teaches you how to really articulate your business and it gave me my first business plan. The network, visibility and opportunities are endless. My entrepreneurial experience cannot be complete without the Tony Elumelu Foundation. I will soon start exporting to other countries thanks to the Foundation. We now employ ten permanent employees and eight additional employees on the commission.”

Commenting on the launch of the 2022 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program, Tony Elumelu Foundation CEO Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu said: “We are constantly blown away by the quality of companies that come from Africa each year. This motivates us to step up our efforts to empower even more entrepreneurs on the continent. The innovation, knowledge and resilience of African entrepreneurs are essential to map Africa’s socio-economic transformation and achieve the continent’s development goals. We are also proud of the increased participation of women in our program, especially with the 2021 cohort where we witnessed a record 68% selection of women entrepreneurs.”

they can go even further than us. As a parent, the desire that your children can do better than you and that you provide the resources and materials they need to make sure they are successful in life. Likewise, at the Foundation, we are equipping the next generation with the tools they need to be successful.”

As the first champion of entrepreneurship in Africa, the Tony Elumelu Foundation empowers women and men across the African continent through entrepreneurship to catalyze economic growth, drive poverty eradication and ensure job creation.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), Africa’s leading philanthropy empowering young African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries, has successfully trained over 200,000 entrepreneurs in core business management skills as part of its 2021 TEF Entrepreneurship Programme.

The Business Management training was conducted exclusively on TEFConnect, the Foundation’s proprietary digital platform that provides capacity-building support, advisory and market linkages to over 1 Million Africans and counting.

The TEF Entrepreneurship Programme Business Management Training equips entrepreneurs with critical skills required to launch and run their businesses at the early growth stage. With a unique curriculum that encompasses topics on Starting Your Business, Business Management & Fundamentals, Leadership & Business Growth, Selecting and Building a Team, amongst others, entrepreneurs are effectively armed to achieve business growth, profitability, and sustained success.

Entrepreneurs were hosted to weekly information sessions, as part of the training, to address relevant concerns and share vital programme updates. All entrepreneurs received active support from coaches and mentors who provided technical guidance, counsel and one-one interaction throughout the duration of the training programme.

The training, which is one element of the 7 pillars of the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme, was carried out in the official African languages including English, French, Portuguese and Arabic, and over 40 percent of trained participants were women.

Commenting on this milestone, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, said “Every year, our commitment to transform Africa is further strengthened with the passion, resilience and talent of the high-calibre entrepreneurs who onboard our flagship programme. Our curricular provides a holistic opportunity for entrepreneurs to learn, grow and contribute to the development of their communities.”

The Chief Executive Officer added: “Furthermore, it is a testament to the eagerness and readiness of African entrepreneurs across all of Africa to make themselves available to transform the continent for good. I would like to commend these entrepreneurs for their discipline, dedication and hard work throughout the training and look forward to the immense impact of their businesses across diverse sectors in Africa. We remain committed to empowering African entrepreneurs with the required resources and support that will ensure that their businesses can scale and drive sustainable change on the continent”.

The TEF Entrepreneurship Training is immediately followed by a Business Plan review process for each entrepreneur. The top-performing entrepreneurs subsequently participate in the Pitching phase of the Programme after which successful entrepreneurs receive a non-returnable seed capital of US$5000 each.

The leading African philanthropy also hopes to train and empower thousands more across the African continent as part of its commitment to catalyze economic growth, drive poverty eradication and ensure job creation.

In 2020, the Tony Elumelu Foundation marked ten years of impact, having empowered and funded nearly 10,000 African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries as part of its US$100 million TEF Entrepreneurship Programme. The Tony Elumelu Foundation is inspired by Tony Elumelu’s economic philosophy of Africapitalism, which positions the private sector, and most importantly entrepreneurs, as the catalyst for the long-term social and economic development of the African continent.
