Driven by a desire to uplift his community, Maliki saw the potential of Mali’s agricultural sector, where over 80% of the population relies on agriculture. His mission is clear: “We want to create several jobs in the agricultural sector by 2030, especially for the youth in rural areas, to reduce rural exodus.” Maliki states. His efforts have already provided full-time employment to 3 people and numerous daily labourers. He has also trained over 150 individuals, including youth and women in rural cooperatives. Maliki now generates an average annual revenue of 1,500,000 – 2,000,000 FCFA.

With a vision for digital agriculture, Maliki is committed to integrating technology into farming to monitor water and fertilizer use, a critical component of his long-term projects. He was one of the 2021 recipients of $2,500 seed funding from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which allowed him to expand his rice production business. Maliki was one of the 1,860 Malian beneficiaries of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) which was designed and implemented with a deep understanding of the regional context and the needs of young entrepreneurs within a fragile environment

Reflecting on the support from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Maliki credits not only the financial assistance but also the entrepreneurial training that strengthened his business skills. Maliki’s work has caught international attention. His business collaborates with countries such as Mali, Senegal, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, and partners with global organisations like the World Food Programme (WFP). His achievements were recently highlighted in Le Mali Émergent, where he shared his ambition to create sustainable employment and contribute to food security across Africa. His participation in initiatives like the UNDP Sense Maker Workshop further underscores his dedication to driving economic empowerment in his country.Maliki’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and dedication to agricultural transformation. He firmly believes that “Africa’s land holds immense wealth and opportunity” and encourages governments to invest in agriculture to ensure food self-sufficiency across the continent.

Join us in celebrating Maliki Sankaré, a visionary leader building a brighter future for Mali through agriculture!

Nigeria’s education system faces significant challenges. According to the World Economic Forum (2017), the country ranks 124th out of 137 nations in primary education quality. Additionally, Fleet, Watkins, & Greubel (2012) report that over 58% of Nigerian schoolchildren lack basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Seeing the struggles of children who couldn’t access quality education due to overcrowded public schools and unaffordable private options, Ogechi Benyeogor took action. With a Master’s degree in education and four years of teaching experience, Ogechi decided to make a difference. She established a low-cost nursery and primary school in her rural community in Asaba, Delta State.

Initially hesitant to start her own venture, Ogechi’s breakthrough came when she joined the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF). Through their twelve-week training and mentorship program, she gained a clearer understanding of business and felt empowered to launch Fidema’s Children Academy.

Today, Fidema’s Children Academy serves over 200 pupils and employs 15 staff members, generating $7,000 annually. This achievement supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of providing accessible and affordable education for all.

Beyond education, Fidema’s Children Academy has also created job opportunities for local residents, offering them a chance to contribute to the community and use their skills to educate the next generation.

Reflecting on her journey, Ogechi shares;

“The foundation helped me discover my potential. After joining the 2016 TEF class, my path to entrepreneurship began. The seed capital allowed me to rent space and buy equipment. Since then, with support from family and business savings, I’ve acquired land and built a suitable school. Despite fierce competition, the mentorship and business education from TEF have been crucial to our success.”

Africa’s population, which currently has the majority between 15 and 24, is expected to double by 2045 according to the African Development Bank, a partner of the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

To mitigate the effects of this, the continent will need to create more jobs, policies and implementation plans that will allow for a more competitive private sector that favours business growth, job creation, and the stimulation of African economies.

For a long while, in dealing with conflict-prone areas and the effects of extreme poverty, Africa has had to depend on foreign aid, and the need for this remains imperative to reduce immediate suffering. However, many have begun to recognise the need to move away from aid for long term positive impact and a more sustainable model of developing the continent.

Africa desperately needs long-term investments in the private sector- the infrastructure, agriculture and manufacturing industries, in order to address growing food insecurity, boost incentives and create the necessary employment opportunities for African youth.

Foreign aid, so far, has done little to improve the living conditions of people at the bottom of the social strata who live below the poverty line.

Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony O. Elumelu continues to assert that a better approach to the cycle of dependency created by the approach of foreign aid to Africa’s problems, is to fund private, for-profit ventures.

Mr. Elumelu’s philosophy has become increasingly popular on the African continent, where he is acknowledged as the pioneer of a private-sector-led approach to accelerating development.

In 2020, at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) conference held in Japan, he reiterated his stance on Africa’s huge return on investment, “Africa is one of the world’s viable destinations for investment. Our huge population, of nearly 1.3 billion people, creates one of the most attractive markets anywhere in the world.”

Based on this philosophy, The Tony Elumelu Foundation was set up to create more successful African business leaders and support the overall economy. So far, the Foundation has funded over 9000 entrepreneurs, and Mr Elumelu also continues to invest in businesses that add value to their local communities and the society at large.

“Global advocacy is that in the 21st century, you must engage with Africa – not from outside, but from within and from the point of view of what we consider important,” Mr Elumelu said in an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show earlier this month.

“We appreciate aid, but we know more importantly that we want to become fishermen.

“We all have a role to play in the development of our continent and we do so by investing in critical sectors of the African economy: infrastructure, power, railways.

“Investing long-term in critical sectors creates economic prosperity for you the investor and at the same time creates social wealth and prosperity and it becomes a win-win for everyone.

Creating policies and incentives that show progress rather than failure is one step in the direction of converting Aid into trade, thereby inspiring citizens to become creators of wealth and enterprise so that they can live from their activities.

Nigerian-born healthcare enthusiast, Dare Odumade, always had inspirations to create solutions to the planet’s key problems using technology. For such big dreams, the fundamental work was to understand these problems and develop a practical means to address them. Down the line, this interest became more tailored and focused on the problems caused by counterfeit medicines in Africa.

An encounter a pharmacist friend in Ghana during his time at MEST (Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology) cemented his decision to build a solution to stop such occurrences. His friend had had an unpleasant experience witnessing a close patient pass on after their liver was ruptured due to fake medicine, while in a hospital.

Shaken by grief and combined passion for change, they researched and discovered that the core problems existed as a result of deeply fragmented supply chains in the pharmaceutical industry. Dare returned to Nigeria in August 2018 and shortly after, founded Chekkit – a social enterprise designed to reward consumers for verifying that a product is original before consuming it, which made him a Tony Elumelu Entrepreneur.

One of the unique features of this innovation is that even without downloading an application, Chekkit can be used instead from a smartphone browser via a link. Other users can visit the app or just dail *347*03*PIN#.

To encourage the practice of this civil duty, Chekkit offers rewards to its users after they verify a medicine and answer few survey questions that support the initiative. The PIN and QR can be found on Chekkit’s unique sticker labels which can be found on medical products and other tangible consumer goods Reporting counterfeits directly on the app qualifies a user for a reward.

Through this innovation, over 130,000 lives have been saved in less than 2 years. Dare has also bootstrapped the business into a 6-figures revenue in USD generating business and now raising VC to scale. Chekkit has registered scores of consumer products in millions on a decentralised secured blockchain network with unique IDs for the Nigerian and Afghanistan markets and will continue to work with pharmaceutical and other consumer goods distributors to ensure they can track and trace the journey of products.

On the home front, Chekkit operates with a self-imposed mandate to the people of Nigeria to ensure counterfeit products are reduced in the society by 70% over the next 5 years. It is also contributing to local communities by empowering everyone to get rewarded for buying their groceries or essentials/merchandise. By providing an avenue for Enterprise businesses to reward their consumers and gain insights, Chekkit is also sensitizing communities about the dangers of counterfeits and the need to check before consuming.

Among many things, the COVID-19 pandemic further buttressed the problems of the broken supply chain in the healthcare industry. Start-ups came to the rescue of communities, just as hospitals demonstrated urgent need for supplies. Chekkit, as a wheel for social change, witnessed a steady increase in demand for their services without increasing marketing budget because brands became more interested in digitally and directly engaging their consumers.

For someone who has always had big dreams, Dare’s vision for Chekkit is to be the seal of genuity for every tangible product, while developing the leading distribution chain tracking technology to make supply chains automated for third world economies and the world at large. He wants people to know the history of what they consume, so that in consumption, they are not disadvantaged in any way.

The Kingdom of Belgium has conferred the honorary distinction of Officer in the Order of Leopold, the country’s oldest and most important National Honour, on Africa’s leading investor and philanthropist, Tony O. Elumelu, CON, in recognition of his commitment to poverty eradication and the economic empowerment of young Africans.

The Ambassador of Belgium to Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Daniel Bertrand, presented the royal decoration on Sunday, November 15 – the Belgian King’s Day and a symbolic national day of celebration, at the Belgian House in Abuja, with public and private sector leaders witnessing the ceremony.

Mr Elumelu has been responsible for initiatives creating millions of jobs and employment for young Africans across the continent, through his philanthropy, The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF). The Foundation’s flagship intervention, the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme, is a 10-year, US$100 million commitment to identify, train, mentor, and fund 10,000 young African entrepreneurs across 54 African countries. Over 9,600 young Africans are current beneficiaries, just six years since its inception. In addition to its own significant programme, the Foundation partners with institutions such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to bring its proven methodology to an even broader universe. Mr Elumelu believes that youth entrepreneurship has the potential to tackle global challenges such as forced migration, poverty, and hunger.

Mr Elumelu’s concept of Africapitalism is redefining national development, making the case for the critical role that the private sector must play in transforming Africa. Mr Elumelu’s businesses are present in 20 African countries and key international markets, with over 30,000 people in employment His investments span power, financial services, healthcare, energy, technology, hospitality, and real estate.

Mr Elumelu chairs family-owned African investment company, Heirs Holdings; pan-African financial services group, the United Bank for Africa (UBA), which operates across Africa, the United Kingdom, France and the only African bank with a commercial deposit taking licence in the United States, and Nigeria’s largest quoted conglomerate, Transcorp, whose subsidiaries include Transcorp Power, one of the leading generators of electricity in Nigeria and Transcorp Hotels Plc, Nigeria’s foremost hospitality brand.

Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who was at the event, said: “Your Excellency Ambassador Daniel Bertrand, Ambassador of Belgium, let me, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, express our deepest appreciation to the King and Queen of Belgium for recognising the wonderful work of Mr. Tony Elumelu and what he is doing in our nation and on the continent of Africa by prioritising the empowerment of our youth”.

Commenting further, he said: “Mr. Elumelu, I listened to your priorities, which include; eradicating poverty, creating jobs and improving access to electricity and I can assure you that this was the motivation of President Muhammadu Buhari when he spoke about lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years. When we identify somebody in the private sector who believes in that core mandate, the government has no option but to continue to support your endeavours, and I can assure you that on behalf of the President, you will continue to receive it. Mustapha concluded, “As Nigerians, we stand here today very proud of the excellent work Mr Elumelu has done in Nigeria and on our continent and we ask him to do more”.

Earlier in 2019, Tony Elumelu was conferred with the National Productivity
Merit Award in Nigeria and in 2020, he featured in the Time 100 most
influential people in the world.

November 1, 2020, Bamako, Mali – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the global development network of the United Nations, and the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) — the leading champion of entrepreneurship in Africa — have opened applications for the TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme to train, mentor and fund 10,000 young Malian entrepreneurs over a 3-year period, as part of significant economic recovery intervention in Mali.

This youth empowerment initiative is part of the broader Tony Elumelu Foundation-UNDP Entrepreneurship Program, launched in 2019 to support 100,000 entrepreneurs across Africa.

The United Nations estimates that over 1.7 million people have been displaced by violence in Mali since 2012, further exacerbating an already volatile Sahel region. The TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme directly addresses the economic roots of the crisis, helping to create a basis for sustainable peace in the long term.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Programme demonstrates that entrepreneurship is the single most effective tool to create jobs, opportunity, economic hope, sustained growth, and poverty alleviation.

Commenting on this development, the Founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu said “under the global leadership of Achim Steiner, the UNDP has shown a long-lasting commitment to vulnerable and at-risk populations throughout Africa and shares our belief at TEF in the power of entrepreneurship and youth empowerment”.

Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, said: “COVID 19 recovery strategies must offer new opportunities for SMEs and the Informal economy. The United Nations Development Programme is proud of our partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, now expanded to Mali – to invest in 10,000 Malian young entrepreneurs over 3 years. This will counter multidimensional crises by creating jobs, boosting innovation and promoting greener economic growth”.

The programme follows the recently concluded TEF-UNDP Sahel Pilot Programme in 2019 which identified, trained, mentored, and funded 2,004 young entrepreneurs across seven Sahel countries, including Mali, where close to 300 young Malian entrepreneurs benefited from this initiative.

The applications for the TEF-UNDP Mali Entrepreneurship Programme will be hosted on TEFConnect, the largest digital networking platform for African entrepreneurs from November 1st to 14th, developed by The Tony Elumelu Foundation. Following the application period, applicants will receive business training and mentorship, before participating in a pitching competition. The final list of beneficiaries to receive funding will be announced shortly after.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE: President Muhammadu Buhari lauds Tony O. Elumelu on his being named among the Time100 Most Influential People of 2020.

The President, President Muhammadu Buhari commends Elumelu’s vision of Africapitalism, which espouses that Africa’s private sector must play a leading role in the continent’s development through long-term investments, entrepreneurship, and regional connectivity, adding that it was just a matter of time before such caught global attention.

President Buhari says Elumelu’s commitment to the development of African youths, whom he has given a voice and empowerment, investing $5,000 in 1,000 young entrepreneurs per year across 54 countries, pedestals him as a visionary, with milk of human kindness, “and such, among others, must have qualified him for the Time Hall of Fame.”

The President wishes Elumelu greater successes on all fronts and recommends his strides to other high networth people.
